What respondents want from AI

The Crain’s column asks leaders to understand the conditions respondents place on useful AI.

Someone can use AI regularly and still want clear rules around it. They may welcome help with their work while wanting a human option when a decision affects their job or family. Those views can sit together in the same person.

Carl’s Crain’s column explores that combination. It draws on our research into respondents’ reported use and expectations, including their interest in human involvement and opportunities to build skills. The article appeared in Crain’s Grand Rapids Business and Crain’s Detroit Business.

For an employer, this suggests asking staff where AI helps and where its use creates concerns. Find out what people need to learn, what information is used to assess them, and whether they can reach someone who can reconsider an important decision.

The research describes respondents’ answers. It does not forecast employment outcomes or establish that people have accepted every use of AI. A useful next step is to study a particular task and the people affected by it.
